Trying to Talk to An Occupy Protestor or Conversing With a Spoiled Illiterate Child

The other day, I got bored, so, I decided to have a political chat with some protestors. You see, in our town were some Occupy Protestors which had been featured in the newspaper, there were about 50 of them by day and 20 by night hanging out on the street corner holding signs and later camped out in the park. The police told them to leave, 5-times, but they didn't. One night at 1:45 AM after shift-change with nothing to do, the police came in and arrested anyone who didn't leave.

It is illegal to camp out in the parks around here, and there is good reason for that, this is an up-scale neighborhood and these protestors are not from this local community, oh I suppose a few may have been but most of them came in from neighboring cities. Mainly, they are angry at the one-percent, which is indeed where I live. What bugs me is that when I talked to these folks they really didn't have any clue as to how the world works, what drives the economy, or how wealth is created.

They were angry about all sorts of things, and yet, their stories were all too similar, they made choices and are where they are, through no fault of their own. Now they want more, and all of them admitted to voting for Obama, every one of them. This is his crowd, this is what he created by pitting poor against rich, dividing the classes, promoting socialism, and all this class warfare.

Now then, I think everyone is a little miffed at the crony capitalism and the cheaters in various financial circles, but let's not throw out the baby with the dirty bath water. You see, if we are going to fix these challenges then we must differentiate between all us hard working free-market capitalists and all the cheaters, I am okay with that. One thing good about cheaters and cheating is it seems to be addictive, and addictions generally bring people down, thus, in the end they pay for it, unfortunately in the process they screw everyone else too.

To those protests, yes, I hear you, I don't like it either, but this blanket attacks on the rich or wealthy is just wrong, that's not what America is about, and I for one have a lot of animosity towards some of the things going on out there, for instance; High frequency trading pisses me off the worst, and now we have our nation's largest banks doing it. So is that the answer, let them scrape the cream off the top of the stock market, commodity market, currency markets, etc, between their derivative trading of everything from the Chuck E. Cheese stock price to cotton futures and to weather and carbon emissions?

It's all BS, a giant gambling casino which was suppose to capitalize American Businesses and industry, it's really sad. Of course, with the George Soros' of the world pumping $180 million into the election of a US President, doubt much is going to change, and the investment banks were all over the manure like flies during the Franks Dodds financial bill, so, you know, the Occupy Protestors might have had a point, but as it stands now, most of those I talked to were just angry and ignorant unsure of much of anything they were talking about. So, please consider all this.

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow has launched a new provocative series of eBooks on Future Concepts.
How Can Any Good Christian Be Against Free Market Capitalism?

Many good Christians have joined the mass mobs in condemnation of capitalism, they somehow believe that capitalism is evil, wrong for America, and demand the changes they'd hoped for. My question is how are we going to wake up the ignorant masses to the reality that just because someone gets up at a podium or teleprompter making a statement - doesn't mean it's true, reality based, or the gentleman or lady knows what on Earth they are talking about. If you think I am concerned about this, well you are right, so let's listen up and let me explain it all to you.

If Christians wish to join with the socialists and good-for-nothing communists and trash free-market capitalism then they have indeed, dismissed the very values we hold dear in the United States of America - namely liberty, freedom, and pursuits of happiness. How could any good-decent-law-abiding Christian be against such noble ideals? Secondly, apparently, folks are confused about capitalism, specifically the differences between:

Crony Capitalism
State Run Capitalism
Free Market Capitalism

They are not the same, not even close, so let's talk. If you don't have a clue as to what I'm talking about you are indeed to be at least partially forgiven as 75% of all Americans don't get it, unfortunately they also vote. Now then, I'm going to give you a little reading assignment because obviously most folks never learned about capitalism in school or why it is so great or how it helped us build this awesome nation so quickly into the a 17 Trillion Dollar powerhouse. That didn't happen by accident folks.

Now then let me ask the question; "How Can Any Good Christian Be Against Free Market Capitalism?"

The answer is they can't be against it, because free market capitalism is pure, it is truth, and it is abundantly obvious why. Secondly, "Free Market Capitalism without Freedom, Isn't" and you can quote me on that. Crony Capitalism and State Run Capitalism create barriers to entry, shortages, and artificially high-prices to funny money to friends of those in power, or to the state, and in doing so prevent choices of purchases and competition which is an automatic safety leveler to keep the free and fair flow of goods, services, money, capital, and labor.

If any good Christian is against Free Market Capitalism, they live in hypocrisy, and if they aren't against crony capitalism they are part of the problem. If a Christian is for State Run Capitalism, then they are Chinese, where Christianity isn't really permitted anyway. See that point? So, all Christians ought to learn the definitions, understand what's going on, or stop all the sound and fury, as it makes them look ignorant. Free-market capitalism is a concept so powerful it can transcend religious thought, if practiced in its nearest and purest form. Please consider all this.

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow has launched a new provocative series of eBooks on Future Concepts.
What is Up with The Occupy Wall Street Crowd - Okay Shut Up and I'll Explain

The Occupy Wall Street crowd seems to be really confused. Rather than condemning crony capitalism, and those who are engaged in the various schemes which are destroying trust in the system which supports our economic base, and funds American Businesses, these folks are busy condemning Millionaires regardless of how they'd achieved that wealth. I say to them, let's not throw out the baby with the bath water, and let's stop condemning banks, regular banks that is.

You see, in Seattle and Oakland the "Occupy Wall Street" Crowd marched on Wells Fargo Bank, which is absolutely comical because Wells Fargo Bank is a "real bank" and a consumer bank, and they were not involved in the shenanigans of Wall Street. But of course the malicious malcontents who threw rocks and broke windows while supposedly participating in the Occupy Protests obviously probably didn't think that through did they?

Worse, what if the Wells Fargo consumer type banks of the world up and left the area, and closed everyone's account out, closed those offices there, and didn't return? Would the local folks be better off? No, they'd be worse off, less competition, and they'd pay higher rates, fees, and prices for banking services, thus, they'd be even angrier, while smaller banks with less economy of scale tried to pick up the difference with high pricing, they too might be seen as "evil bankers" and therefore, they too would leave.

Then those poor neighborhoods perhaps would have no banking services, and without that, it would affect local businesses, merchants, and entrepreneurs and therefore fewer jobs too. These protests are nonsensical and seem to point to a real problem with human mobs tearing down civilization and society. Personally, and this is of course my opinion, I see the real problem with the Obama White House in promoting class-warfare, after all, Obama big claim to fame has been his work in Chicago as a Community Protest Organizer" and so I ask is this the hope and change you'd hoped for?

People are marching in the streets because they are angry, but at what, they don't even know, as they run around and find people, socio-economic classes, and businesses to blame, and hate. Beware the mass mobs of humanity, as they operate as a brainless organism, stimulated by negative energy, like rabid dogs hunting in packs. Is that the America you want, is that the change you wish to see, I ask you; is this what you had always hoped the United States could be?

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow has launched a new provocative series of eBooks on Future Concepts.
US Federal Government - It's Not Perfect, But Should We Expect More?

There sure are a lot of people criticizing the United State's Federal Government. They say things such as; the Federal Government is wasteful, corrupt, incompetent, and inefficient. And whereas, one could say with such a huge blob of bureaucracy one is bound to find some inefficiencies, waste, corruption, and incompetence right? Sure that makes sense, nothing is perfect, not you, your family, not your company, and not your closest friends either.

Not long ago, I was debating this with an acquaintance who stated; "There are holes in the system." Well, indeed, there always will be, it is the nature of complex systems and Murphy will always exploit the weaknesses. My acquaintance also noted; "There are both right and wrong policies. Good and bad policies." Yes, and it would be hard to argue with that either. And when it comes to incompetence, yes, there are "Competent officials and incompetent officials."

Surely, I think we all accept that, or should at least be honest with ourselves on those points. Likewise there are corrupted and less-than-corrupt officials, at all levels of the bureaucracy. Now, my acquaintance asks a most dubious question, one not often asked; "The question is; are the scales tipped in the wrong direction?"

Okay so, that is one way consider it, however, I'd like to form a different question, as I am not so comfortable with where the answers to this question takes us. You see, since historically political decisions lead to unintended consequences, shouldn't government be smaller, making fewer decisions, therefore they'd have fewer messes to clean-up. Further, if government makes a mess, why would we put our faith in their ability to fix it?

Let's discuss one more inquiry in this thought of the day, shall we? "Is there more wrong, bad and incompetence than right, good and competence?"

Once again, I'd like to state that maybe that is the wrong question to ask as well, because, maybe the system is not working because it's gotten off track;

1.) Revolving Door of Politicians, Bureaucrats, regulators, government lawyers going to work for those who work to abuse the system, using those insider connections.

2.) Abuses of privileges of all three branches of government, over stepping their checks and balances. Legislating from the bench, obscure executive orders, DOJ witch hunts of other branches, legislators interfering in regulatory investigations, etc. etc.

3.) A pay-to-play government, for lobbyists, corporations, unions - without the ability for a citizen or small businesses to express their concerns.

If the system of checks-and-balances has been corrupted, then in reality it does not exist, without it, the natural human tendencies will rear their ugly heads early and often. Some might say that it's because "democracy is messy" as Obama said in his State of the Union Address. No, I'd say that Chicago Mafia style dirty politics is messy, and it's no way to run the greatest nation in the history of mankind.

"This is not a perfect world we live in!"

No, it's not, but that doesn't mean it can't be, or that we can't do better with our Federal Government than we have in past periods. Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this.

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow is the Founder of the Online Think Tank, a diverse group of achievers, experts, innovators, entrepreneurs, thinkers, futurists, academics, dreamers, leaders, and general all around brilliant minds.
Qaddafi's Libya: "The People Are the Master"

March 3, 2011. Muammar al Qaddafi, said recently, "The People are the master" To some degree this must be the truth as he has many supporters and still the support of the Army. In fact he seems to have more supporters then there are Rebels'. The Government forces moved east and word is that the oil fields in Garza are in Government hands again.

Either way, Qaddafi could last a long time if the UN does not send in forces to aid the rebellion, a prospect that is not likely to take place soon. Some NATO, countries are talking about setting up a no fly zone over Libya, This is a very fine idea. However, a no fly zone is not as easy as it looks, and would involve several difficult issues, not the least of which is, who will pay for it?

Russia, for one has asked the UN Security Council to do exactly that, the problem is that the UN will need Air forces in the area and a lot of them. Who? Therefore, will the UN send to supply the airpower needed to do the job? You know it, the United States. The United States does not have sufficient forces in the area to complete such a task. To make things more complex Libya still has all its anti aircraft elements still intact.

More than that, to set up a no fly zone would be an act of war against a Middle Eastern country. If such an attack is undertaken by the UN who will most likely send American forces to do the job, then the Arab world may see this from a different point of view. Why, because in order to set up a no fly zone somebody has to destroy the Libyan Air force, and still again we have Americans killing Arabs. The very idea of having one more place where Americans kill Arabs will not be a good for Obama's foreign affairs.

Besides: US. Forces are heavily engaged in Afghanistan, and still mopping up in Iraq. To make things really complex, we are still watching the unstable Persian Gulf area. Starting a new military salient in Libya will give rise to the possibility of a new Afghanistan kind of war in Libya. To stack that along side of existing military commitments in the area may be unthinkable.

Mr. Robert Michael Gates, who is the 22nd and current United States Secretary of Defense, told a congressional panel on Wednesday "A no-fly zone begins with an attack on Libya" to destroy its air defenses." Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is the 67th United States Secretary of State; Clinton said, she feared the prospect of Libya becoming infested with al-Qaida or affiliated terrorist groups on the scale of Somalia. Clinton further stated, "We are taking no option off the table so long as the Libyan government continues to turn its guns on its own people,"

Earlier this week Mr. Gates ordered to us warships into the region namely: the amphibious assault ships USS Kearsarge and the USS Ponce. These hold about 45 Helicopters of various types each, and a cadre of marines. These ships are said to be in place to help with the evacuation of Americans from the fighting region.

The outcome of the conflict is unclear at this point. If the world really wants Qaddafi out of power then it could be some time before a military intervention will be possible and Qaddafi seems to have the support and the equipment needed to stay for some time.

By: Robert Tafolla
Thank You, Robert Tafolla. http://emotionalintelligencebooks.com
Email-: tafolla1944@Yahoo.com

Constitutionally Legal - Yet Highly Inappropriate!

Just because something is allowed by law in our free society - just because you can constitutionally do something, doesn't mean it is wise to do so. You see, we really need to consider that in order to maintain civility, we really need to look inward at our own behavior. Lately, I've noticed the main-stream media blowing issues out of proportion - yes, it must be an election year! It seems that the media likes all that chaos and controversy, but using that to amplify animosity, distrust, anger, revenge, or bad behavior really serves no free man.

Yes, we have unbelievable freedoms in this country - freedom of the press, freedom of speech, etc., etc. but we shouldn't go around abusing it or manipulating it to cause problems. We have enough jealous enemies around the world who already do that, they use our freedoms against us, we need not do it to ourselves, we really ought to stick together here. What do I mean by constitutionally legal, yet highly inappropriate? Well, how about things such as;

- Burning an American Flag
- Disrupting a Soldiers Funeral with a, Anti-War Protest Across the Street
- Building a Mosque at Ground Zero
- Race-Baiting Speech
- Causing Controversy onto Your Fellow Man Without Regard
- Flaming Someone on a Social Network
- Spreading False Rumors at Work

Yes, I know that sound and fury is practically an American Tradition, but still, it seems the behavior of far too many folks is really pushing the threshold of civility. No, I am not, and will not call for more laws, or impeding of free speech, rather, I'd ask all Americans to please, think twice before stirring the pot for your own amusement. I say here today to my fellow Americans, think twice. Stick together, celebrate diversity, celebrate us, and yourself as an individual. Celebrate all of it.

Why you ask? Because we live in the greatest nation ever created in the history of the human species. We are great, that means all of us. But with this great gift of such a great country, well, it requires a little bit of personal responsibility. So, don't let the mob, or some social network bend your mind into thinking it is okay to trash on your fellow man, or our nation. It's really not okay, it's not right - and whereas, you may have the right to carry on that way. I ask you to apply these to simple tests:

1.-What would your mom think of what you are doing?

2.-Is what you are doing fair for all concerned?

Then ask yourself, is this really the right thing to do today? Please consider all this.

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow is the Founder of the Online Think Tank, a diverse group of achievers, experts, innovators, entrepreneurs, thinkers, futurists, academics, dreamers, leaders, and general all around brilliant minds.
What Is Happening to You America?

I have been watching with sadness, the news over the controversy on a Pastor from Florida who had plans to burn the Koran on September eleven,

Although like him I believe that Islam is a heretic religion, and that the writings in the Koran could be interpreted as enticing its followers to gross violence and disregard for life and the living, I am persuaded that If our Lord Jesus Christ was walking on earth today, He would be opposed the burning of this book, not because Muslims would be offended or insulted, but because of who He is and what He taught us. For Jesus gave us a gospel of peace, and of love to neighbor; for He taught us to love our enemies and those who persecute us.

In any case, however wrong this pastor might be, I have seen in America, a sad spectacle of deconstruction.

I have seen how the masses and the media and the government had all ganged against this unknown from Florida, and the only hidden motivation behind this mounting pressure on him has nothing to do with respect or love; though no one dares to admit it, this repudiation of this pastor's actions is solely based on fear.

I saw with disbelief how this pastor was manipulated into discredit by the media and some Islamic leaders, and he walked into the trap like a sheep to the slaughter house, I saw a leader from a Florida mosque being interviewed on television, and even a blind person would have noticed how this man was lying in front of the cameras, and how he was being encouraged by the line of questions from the media to tell more lies.

I saw a man with conviction, wrong as they may have been, being called on television a lunatic, a desperate attention seeker, a pathologic liar, and many other names not worth mentioning, with the only purpose of shredding his credibility to pieces.

Americans seem to have forgotten that this country was founded on Christian principles, and that the Heroes who founded it fought against oppression and tyranny; and yet today we do not seem to realize how this fear is sinking us back into oppression.

I wonder what happened with the William Mckinleys and Theodore Roosevelts of America, who just a few decades ago displayed around the world the banner of an invincible, powerful and triumphant America.

Today we tremble at the thought of somebody burning a few religious books In the middle of nowhere, today fear has bent us into allowing our banner of patriotism and identity to be stepped on, spit on, and insulted.

If what the Terrorists wanted was to terrorize us, then they have already won, for today America is living in fear, and the Hypocrisy of talking about reconciliation and right of religion and equality does not hide that fact.

When a bunch of Bibles are burned in an Islamic country, is okay because they are Islamic, when a few Christians are killed or abused or their rights violated in an Islamic country, is not a bid deal, if an Islamic government puts a bunch of Americans in prison because they are Christians, then we move to reasonable diplomatic negotiation, not to offend their religious beliefs,

When our women travel to an Islamic State they have to submit to their barbaric beliefs and traditions or risk imprisonment and even death, yet when an Islamic person comes to America he can proclaim his rights and export those same barbaric beliefs and traditions into our world, and we are fine with that. Does that make any sense?

Yasser Arafat, a well known extremist from the Middle East, said a few years ago that Islam will impose its power in the world without a war in just a few years; today we are seeing the truth of those words right in our soil.

Crazy or not, this Pastor from Florida said a significant truth in one of his interviews, when will we put our foot down, how far will they go before we do something about it.

I am proud to be a Canadian, but I would be just as proud if I was an American, for Americans have a heart for freedom and a pride for country, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and as an American I would be standing in defense of that pride with fierce boldness. But beyond all of that I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ and I have an especial admiration for American History, for it was forged on the principals of fundamental Christianity.

Today America is slowly walking away form its foundation, and unless the government and politicians open their eyes and start taking serious action, it will not be long before some stranger comes in and impose a new set of rules.

America's Christian values and Biblical foundation on which its constitution and declaration of independence were based are being slowly melted into a strange blend of "tolerant legislations"

What I always loved about America is slowly fading away, Patriotism, Identity, and sheer strength. Do not let it go any further America, speak out, cast your vote, Legislate, and stop this insanity which is turning America into a toy for the "Radical Muslims" to play with...

Look at your flag America, look ant your anthem, look at your heroes, and look at the history of those thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in the front lines in foreign countries to defend the greatness of this nation.

Wake up America, turn back to being who you are, for your strength is not in your weapons and your mighty Army or in your foreign policies, it is in the heart of your men and women, it is in the courage of those who historically fought against all odds to make you who you are today, and that passion and that love and that power is still alive in your heart, so wake up America before is too late.

By: Jose Luna
http://casadesalvacion.blogspot.com
Rev.
Where Have Our Heroes Gone?

What has happened here in America? Where have all our heroes gone? Our politically-correct, afraid-to-offend and oh-dear-I-cannot-take-a-stand mentality has robbed us of the people who would genuinely inspire us and show us the way. We have become a country and culture that now celebrate mediocrity and somehow find value in the almost-prurient prying into the lives of people private and public. Our "American Icons" are now movie "stars," reality TV wannabes and American Idol idiots.

Please, tell me again, why should I even give a damn about any of these people? Who are they? Why should they occupy space and time in our minds, hearts and daily concern? Where are those of true substance and grit; the people that show us what it is to be fully human and make us want to be somehow simply "more" than we are now? Where are those who have the guts to venture into uncharted seas of action without first needing the "thumbs-up" from a self-serving and dumbed-down public?

We no longer value the idea of simply doing the right thing because it is just that; right. There always seems to be a "me agenda" attached. What will I get out of it? And, why can't I get, have, own or play with what the other guy has? Most seem not to take into any account that the "other guy" might have actually worked for; put some effort in and (oh my God!) actually practiced some self-denial to garner his accomplishments.

America has become a culture of flash and the big "bling!" Just because someone or something is louder, bigger, longer, stranger or more "out there," we give them or it our attention. And, somehow, simply getting our attention equates to value. The "quiet" and "everyday" intent and actions that should be at the core of our value system are being steamrolled by an almost hysterical search for the extreme scream; for the biggest "look at me!"

And, the counter balance to this "pay attention to me" mindset is that what was once the norm-kindness, caring for the other guy, helping your neighbor, simple politeness - are now seen as extraordinary behavior. When neighbors help a home-bound woman on the block, they are touted as "heroes" for actions that are simply what "one does for another." If these actions are seen as special, then we can so easily tell ourselves, "Well, that is for the other guy to do; that special person. Not me."

We were once seen as a nation of heroes. We were a country of quiet (Oh, yes, please.), everyday Americans who simply knew what the right thing to do was; and we did it. Each of us was part of the whole; working together to get jobs done and missions accomplished. Today's "Me first," "Where's mine?" and "It's too hard" statements were completely foreign to the American mind and attitude.

To answer my own question, "Where have our heroes gone?" I believe they are still here. Their actions and heroics are quite simply no longer seen nor cared about; and we are so much the poorer, sadder and more lost because of it.

By: Robin Korth
http://www.insightsonaging.com

Not Important If You Win Or Lose, But That You Have Fun - Oh Really?

They say it's not important if you win or lose, but that you have fun in the process. To me that's a copout, because I always win, and I have more fun! Winning is fun, I am not sure why more people don't get it. But I have a sneaky suspicion as to why this is, you see, I just bet that most of the people that say stuff like that, are not very good at winning, rather they are really good at making excuses, and probably fairly good at the blame game.

In fact, I think we have a real problem, I think we've allowed too much of this attitude to permeate our society. Indeed, it seems we've collected leaders and representatives to govern our lives who spend a good amount of time reporting this socialist, loser attitude. It's quite unbecoming of an American to act like this and say these things. You see, there's nothing wrong with winning, there's nothing wrong with doing your best, and that is practically an American tradition.

Apparently, what we have is a group of new leaders who were tapping into the negative biofeedback, the low self-esteem, and this psychological depression of the electorate, and they are trying to make people feel weak, and then they come to their rescue, and tell them they will solve all their problems. Why would anyone stoop so low as to use such a manipulative strategy on their fellow citizens? Worse, what type of an American would allow themselves to be manipulated in that way.

For someone to say it doesn't matter if you win or lose, well, that's just not the truth, as it very much does matter. It matters that you accomplish things, that you are successful, that you are able to build a good life for your family, it is important that our country succeeds, and the company you work at succeeds, and it is important that you give 110% in everything you do. To just cruise through life, and have the government take care of everything for you, and while you put out little effort, that's just not American.

Please consider all this.

By: Lance Winslow
Lance Winslow is the Founder of the Online Think Tank, a diverse group of achievers, experts, innovators, entrepreneurs, thinkers, futurists, academics, dreamers, leaders, and general all around brilliant minds.
Young People and Liberalism

It has long been a generally accepted philosophy that the youth of our nation is often associated with liberal thought. And thus, right or wrong, are associated with the Democratic Party by default. The basic question is - why?

It's quite simple really. The very lack of life experience synonymous with youthfulness is the key.

When we are young, many of us tend to be idealists rather than realists. Now, idealism in and of itself is by no means a bad thing. But, unless the fantasy is coated with reality, it can be very dangerous. The two major examples of this are the Communist theory of government and the concept of Marxism.

In theory, Communism is the perfect government and should result in a Utopian state. However, it has never succeeded and cannot succeed in the real world. Human nature simply won't allow it. Instead of a Utopian ideal, put into practice Communism and Marxist thought have resulted in little more than widespread poverty, an unbelievable gap between the rich and the poor, heavy oppression and utter chaos.

The other major reason why young people tend to align with liberal thought is that quite frankly, they make for an easy target. The reasons for this are two-fold.

The first reason is that our children are so very impressionable. They can easily be molded to believe things through the use of the education system, advertising and other means of communication and information. When I was in school, we where taught that Democrats are for the "little people" and Republicans are for the rich and wealthy. Sadly, I'm sure some of us just took that as gospel and never delved deeper in search of the truth.

The lack of delving deeper speaks to my second point. Many young people lack either the desire or the drive to do more than take the word of the so-called authorities that bombard them with one-sided information. Sources like "The Daily Show" and the 30 seconds of news snippets periodically shown on MTV at least influence, if not completely form their views.

But, there is hope.

New research suggests that 40% of young Americans now consider themselves conservatives. That is a staggering number considering the history of this demographic. This suggests that at least some of the youth are taking the initiative to find out more than simply what they are being fed by the mainstream media.

It also seems to be a generally accepted idea that as most of us mature, we tend to take more moderate (like myself) or conservative stances. Again, this goes back to the issue of real world experience.

Perhaps Winston Churchill put it best when he said, "Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."

By: Jason Greiner
http://www.3riverscreative.com

Basic Economics and Borrowed Spending

Economics 101?

Much has been said about the burgeoning federal debt recently. Since being inaugurated, President Obama has spent more money than all previous United States Presidents combined, adjusting for inflation. That being said, President Obama has spent money that doesn't exist. Estimates by the Congressional Budget Office, the place that reviews money coming in and going out that the government proposes in legislation, has pegged our trillion dollar deficit as dangerously near the point of no return. If something isn't done to curtail, cut and stop spending soon, the United States will lose it's credit rating, and for the first time in history, default on it's debt.

So how did we get here. I'll see if I can explain simply. As we should learn about budgets and income and expense, every single dollar the Federal Government spends, has been collected through some tax placed on the individuals and businesses that fall under it's power, in this case, the United States citizens. We work to provide for ourselves and our families, enjoy vacations, save money for retirement and live our lives. The government taxes us and levies fees against us for the work and products we provide and produce. If the government spends more money than they take in, the difference is called the deficit and must be made up by borrowing money. More often than not, the government will sell bonds to another government, like China, and pay interest on those bonds so they can continue to spend when they don't bring in enough from taxes.

President Obama and Democrats in power have decided that spending money that hasn't even been earned yet, by ourselves and our unborn progeny is the way to remove us from the recession. This line of thinking comes from Keynes, an English economist during the early 20th century who wrote extensively on the spending power of the government and what it should be able to accomplish during periods of negative or no economic growth; i.e. during a recession with high unemployment, few jobs, and little goods and services being rendered or produced.

With almost 100 years of time between Keynes economic theories and the present day, we do have quite a bit of real world data to use in examining how accurate Keynesian economics really are and if they work on planet earth. The short answer is they don't. They fail miserably and prolong the recessionary periods during which they are implemented.

FD Roosevelt, who is championed as the President who brought the country out of the Great Depression during the 1930's followed these principles to the letter through his burgeoning deficit spending and "job creation" at the government level with all of his projects across the country like the WPA, NRA and a host of other alphabet soup government agencies. He did this using borrowed money and by raising taxes. His principal belief was that the government could make people work to bring the economy back around, using their own money, or lack thereof to do it.

In order to understand this theory of economics, it would be like you being out of work with no income or reduced income. You take a cash advance or special offer from your credit card company to borrow against your credit line to have some money back in your pocket. If you think that by borrowing money from your credit line, putting it in your pocket and then saying, you've got income again is preposterous and doesn't make any sense, you'd be right. You haven't improved your ability to care for yourself at all, you've only made yourself a slave to the issuer of the credit card company that loaned you the money and now wants you to pay interest on the loan. You still have no income and now have debt you have to pay for because you borrowed money you didn't have. This is insane.

Rational people understand that eventually you'll reach your credit limit and not be able to borrow anymore. You still have no income and are now in danger of defaulting on your payments of borrowed money to the bank and are in fact worse off than you were before.

This describes exactly the problem the we face now. Only, when you and I reach our credit limit, we can't just raise our limit and borrow more money to spend away that which we haven't earned. This is exactly what the Democratic Congress has done this year on more than two occasions, rather than stop spending. We only have so much time left, before our debt literally renders our country bankrupt and finished.

To conclude, Keynesian economic theory does not work. Never has; never will. In fact, those countries that didn't spend, specifically in Western Europe, during the 1930's Depression, on average saw their economic activity and countries improve a full 7 years before the United States did, and only the onset of World War II allowed us to ramp up our production and start putting people back to work and not living on borrowed money as we are doing once again, right now.

As history repeats itself, we sure aren't electing anybody to lead us who knows anything about history and basic economics.

By: Dan Orr
I'm Dan Orr, an entrepreneur with businesses in real estate and e-commerce.
Health Care Rationing - A Love Story

What kind of bureaucrat would declare his love for Britain's stingy, depressing, complicated, cold and arbitrary National Health Service by describing it as "generous, hopeful, confident, joyous and just"?

That would be Harvard-based pediatrician Donald Berwick, who recently received a recess appointment as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by the bureaucrat who describes his pessimistic and stale vision for America as "hope and change."

Recess appointments are an executive procedure used, for better or for worse, when the Senate gives a presidential appointee a difficult time during confirmation hearings-for example, when they filibuster a nominee. Obama's appointment of Berwick bears the distinction of having been given without a confirmation hearing having even been scheduled.

It's as though Obama decided that the very requirement that his nominee appear before a Democratic-controlled Senate constituted an unreasonably difficult hurdle. This isn't a recess appointment - it's a vacation to Bermuda appointment.

As the Wall Street Journal noted, "Circumventing Senate confirmation to appoint the new Medicare chief is part of the same political willfulness that inflicted ObamaCare on the country despite the objections of most voters." CBS News observed, "The debate over Berwick's recess appointment makes clear what the White House knew all too well - Berwick may not have survived the Senate confirmation process, which would have turned into a proxy debate over health care reform."

Berwick, who will be put in charge of the health care of 100 million Americans without so much as a public query about his plans in office, has been quoted saying, "I am romantic about the N.H.S.; I love it." He has called himself "an American fan" of the system, "distant and starry-eyed."

In his London speech commemorating the N.H.S.'s 60th birthday, Berwick delivered such pro-American pronouncements to his audience as "Do not trust market forces to give you the system you need... I cannot believe that the individual health care consumer can enforce through choice the proper configurations of a system as massive and complex as health care. That is for leaders to do."

When it comes to Berwick's affection for health care systems centered around use of death panels, apparently absence makes the heart grow fonder. After returning home and mooning over the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, the operational arm of the N.H.S., Berwick realized that "All I need to do to rediscover the romance is to look at health care in my own country."

That country would be the United States, which has the greatest health care system in the world, and would be a profound source of inspiration for anyone who truly loved medicine. Berwick's own place of employment is Harvard Medical School, where you would think there would have been a few medical advances in recent years to set his heart aflutter.

But no - Berwick's passion is for euthanasia counseling and quality-adjusted life years.

Berwick of course has never had to live under the jurisdiction of the N.H.S. You might call his affair with the British health care system a long-distance relationship.

Describing the supposed British backlash against American conservatives' depiction of the N.H.S. during the health care reform debate last summer, the New York Times gushed, "A Twitter campaign, We Love The N.H.S., is still going strong, with supporters sending messages about their own good experiences."

In fact, said campaign didn't even last 30 days from its first Tweet to its last, and has attracted a piddly 520 followers internationally. This is despite such helpful but unheeded administrative prompts as "What do you love about the NHS?" and "Please Retweet: 10,000 supporters visualised."

Admittedly, the riotously popular N.H.S. does have a Facebook fan page with 3,500 members. Then again, an ill-worded N.H.S. sign implying that contraception would be facilitated by... nontraditional intercourse has a Facebook fan page with 124,475 members. So perhaps fan counts are not such a flattering measure of the N.H.S.'s popularity.

Even the New York Times had to admit that Brits "complain endlessly about the National Health Service... They deplore the system's waiting lists, its regional disparities in treatment, its infection-breeding hospitals and its top-heavy bureaucracy." I guess the grass is greener on the other side of the pond!

If Donald Berwick wants to swoon over endless waiting lists, fatally protracted wait times, diminished access to specialized care, craven efforts to shield patients from learning about or acquiring costly life-saving drugs, pathetic heart attack and cancer survival rates, depersonalized patient treatment, and centralized bureaucratic decision-making about individual health care options, that's his choice. But forgive the rest of the U.S. if we aren't quite as smitten as he is.

By: Scott Spiegel
http://www.scottspiegel.com
