Politics In America - Political Viewpoints
Healthcare, Anecdotes and The President

Like millions of other Americans, I watched the President deliver his speeches on healthcare before Congress and America, shouting and all. As neither a Democrat nor Republican, I am unfettered by the need to promote some party line or talking points. But I do have an opinion.

So here are my impressions:

1. The President does not either accept or understand how markets work. I have seen this in pretty much all of his utterances on business and markets in general. I am not sure if he is a socialist at his core or just doesn't accept free market principles, but regardless he doesn't get it.

2. The President freely uses stories without foundation to support his arguments. No, I am not calling out "You lie!" However, I am calling him a pretty typical politician. For example, he cited in his now infamous speech, a couple of examples of insurance companies dropping coverage on sick people. He just conveniently left out the part about how both of his examples lied on their insurance applications about their health histories and how one of them got covered for a major treatment anyway! Oh, and he left out the part about how health insurance is not like car insurance in that it is illegal for any health insurer to drop anyone for any reason other than they lied when they filled out the application. If you tell the truth on your application, get accepted, and then get sick later, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. If you lie, you do. Which is only right and logical, no?

3. President Obama keeps talking about saving half of the cost of the new health reform with savings in Medicare by reducing "waste". Okay, trivia question, has there ever been a successful government run program where waste has been eliminated? No, not one. Since government programs are run by bureaucracies as opposed to private companies, profit and loss are not concerns to be considered. Why would anyone expect waste to be eliminated without consequence? This is why seniors hear "savings" and think "rationing". They are correct as the ONLY way for a bureaucracy to save real money is to ration benefits, period.

Look, the thing is that we need to discern the difference between a problem and a crisis. Health care and its cost are a problem, sure; it is not a crisis. We can do a couple of common sense things like malpractice reform and opening up insurance to interstate competition (like practically every other kind of insurance) and leave it at that for now. After all, in case anyone hasn't noticed, we are in the middle of a deep recession and this is no time to monkey around with a sixth of the whole economy, especially in a rush.

Which leads me to my last question: Since it is a given that most, if not all of the politicians voting on this thing have not actually read the bills (there are several and each is over 1000 pages), why the rush giving everyone a chance to study? Could it be that the more you know, the less you may like it?

Will Environmental Politics Destroy America?

Americans like clean. We want to drink pure water and breathe safe air. We like to see the stars at night and blue skies in the day. The Environmental movement is taking advantage of these good feelings to promote an agenda that would make Karl Marx proud.

Global warming is the gift that keeps on giving to the environmentalists. They want us to blindly believe that global temperatures are rising mainly because of human activity. We are not allowed to question the position that disaster is coming if we don't submit to global environmental policies. We are to accept that green jobs by the millions will be created if we follow their leading.

I believe that environmentalists want more than clean. They desire to completely dismantle capitalism, establish population control, reduce private property, and grant government control over everything. Their successful agenda would mean the end to America as we know it. Cap and Trade is only the beginning.

I am not a scientist. I am reminded of this by liberal friends every time I quote something that questions official environmental positions. Not only do I not have a PHD in Climatology, they make me feel really dumb. They accept that the science is settled and no skeptical view can be entertained since it is funded by "big oil". Never mind that their leading voice is Al Gore, a rich kid with a degree in journalism and a lifetime politician with no scientific credentials.

I can't take you to a lab or observatory and demonstrate how various gases affect the ozone, but I can offer a little common sense. Let's start with "saving the planet". Environmentalists have led us to believe that with correct policies we can turn global warming around. Here is my challenge to the scientists and Al - save one community by stopping the eruption of a volcano or altering the path of a hurricane. First prove your scientific ability, then you can talk politics and we will listen. Meteorologists can't even predict the weather half the time.

Al Gore and many environmentalists cherry pick when it comes to science. You will only hear the evidence that supports their views. I have been reading a lot of science lately to understand this mess, it is a very complex subject. There are real scientists out there who are skeptical of the global warming propositions, but according to Al and others, should be left out of the debate. You don't have to be a genius to know, that ain't good science.

This week a report came out that said the damage to New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina was caused by man. If the levees and other protections had been maintained according to plan, there would have been much less destruction. In other words, the government failed. This is the same government that will "save the planet".

I live in a Chicago suburb. The winters have been colder and snowier for several years. June and October this year were among the coldest on record. Al said that Katrina was just the beginning as storms will get worse due to global warming. Every year since the experts predicted hurricane seasons with more and greater storms. They were all wrong.

The United Nations is moving to tax the wealthier countries in the world to the tune of trillions. Their treaties will demand that we reduce our usage of energy even if it slows our economy. There is more to this movement than soot in our eyes.

I don't fear scientists that get their money from big oil. I fear scientists that get their money from government grants based on political correctness. Environmental politics are bad for our country. Keep America clean!

Do We Want a Welfare State?
Friday, December 4, 2009, 01:12 PM - Entitlement

Medicaid is a program for people who can't afford health insurance. Social Security is a program to provide retirement for seniors. Medicare is a program to give health insurance to seniors. Public schools is a program providing education for kids K-12. Smaller programs help the poor with housing and other basic needs. Now, congress is trying to make healthcare the next huge entitlement. As we slide deeper into a welfare state, is this a good thing?

A welfare state is when a country assumes primary responsibility for the welfare of its citizens. At a minimum, it is a "safety net" with varying degrees of welfare. Some would say that its the middle ground between communism and capitalism.

The best example of a successful modern welfare state is Denmark. Citizens in Denmark have healthcare provided for them, retirement, education, and much more. Education is paid for all the way through graduate school. Studies reveal that Denmark people are happy with their system. They have low unemployment since 38% of the people work for the government.

The big negative to any welfare state is taxes. Denmark has the highest taxes in the world. They have a 25%VAT (Value Added Tax) tax. This is a 25% tax on everything you buy. Income tax is 40-60% depending on how much money you make. The automobile tax is 180%. Add the VAT and the taxes on a $10,000 car is over $20,000. Gas is $10 per gallon because of taxes. Not surprisingly, most people take public transportation or ride bikes to get around.

Before you think that the US can join in this fun, let me remind you of some differences between the 2 countries. Denmark is a geographically small nation with a total population equaling about half that of Chicago metro. Economically, they produce their own oil and export about 6 times more than they use. They don't spend much on military. In WWII they surrendered to Hitler in the first 2 hours of the invasion. I doubt they will be much help against any threat today.

The real cost of a welfare system is economic freedom. Most of your money will go to the government for redistribution to its citizens. People in the US want the benefits of a welfare state, but without the cost. We must be willing to sign over our checks to the government, trust them to provide good services, and submit to their decisions regarding personal issues. I oppose this and it explains why conservatives are against a national healthcare plan.

I also believe America is unique. Liberals despise that attitude. America has been the most successful capitalistic enterprise in the history of the world. Where would Europe be today without the capitalism of America? It provided the resources necessary for a victorious campaign in WWII and the Marshall Plan, paid for by Americans, to rebuild Europe after the devastation. If Hitler had won, where would Denmark be today?

We don't want any citizen to go hungry or live with inadequate healthcare. I believe the answer is capitalism. To get the full benefits of capitalism the government needs to start with tax reform. Instead of our complex, outdated, and unfair system we could do something like Denmark's VAT. Do away with all taxes and then establish one tax with no loopholes. It would be a consumption tax paid at the point of purchase of any product or service. Proponents of this "FairTax Plan" say that to pay for current government expenses it would take around 25%. As people and businesses prosper they will buy more and the government will have more money.

Honest capitalism should raise that standard of living for every citizen and even foreign business partners. Instead of traveling the world and apologizing for America, Obama needs another summit to study what made America great. Obama campaigned on the promise to grow the welfare state. Is this really what we want?

Can We Believe in What Drug Companies Tell Us About Medications?
Friday, December 4, 2009, 12:59 PM - Healthcare

I am very concerned about the new drugs the drug companies are producing to treat various diseases and conditions. One especially has impacted my life and my wife's to the extent that we had the most disastrous ten months of our lives. I am presently 72 and my wife is 68 and we were very active and spent as much time as we could watching our five grandchildren. If that does not keep you in pretty good shape then nothing else will.

My wife has a condition known as gastroparesis which is the abnormal emptying of the stomach into the digestive tract. The stomach empties very slowly and causes discomfort to the person. It can be very disconcerting. We went to a gastroentrologist and he prescribed a drug called metroclopromide. The name metoclopromide is the generic term for Reglan, made by various manufacturers. She took this drug at every meal from April up to December. It seemed to work well for the first few months.

By June she started having the most severe feelings of nervousness and insomnia. Jerking movements of the legs and feet and the inability to sit still. Jaw clenching and mouth twisting and chewing motions. The symptoms seem to mimic parkinsonism to a degree with facial grimacing and lassitude, and mainly described by a disorder called tardive dyskinesia with hand tremors and involuntary movements of the trunk and extremities and the mouth and face. The person develops the inability to sit still and deep depression develops and suicidal feelings can develop.

I can remember feeling as if I were going to lose her to a possible physical and or mental breakdown. We were frantic going from one doctor to another for help in finding out what was happening and why? The doctors tried many different medications and none made a big enough difference to help in any real way. We went to see a psychiatrist and an internist and a parkinson specialist and several other specialists trying to find the cause of all these symptoms.

By the time things became really bad, she lost her appetite altogether and ate very little and stopped taking the metoclopramide in December. Things started to improve slightly and we started to look on the web for things we could try. At the time we did not connect the medication to the problems. We eventually found that the drug had been investigated because of the great many people that were reporting adverse symptoms and reactions and that the FDA had issued a black box warning to be placed on metoclopramide . When we did look up the drug we found that their were many lawsuits going forward and even class action suits. The other problem was that doctors were not advised about strictly limiting the use of the drug for periods of not more than six weeks. This warning came in late February of 09.

After several months the symptoms she had, started to ease up but very slowly. The return of feeling and the loss of the abnormal movements took a period of several months. Thank God they gradually disappeared after the awful time we spent dealing with them and trying to stop them by using every means we knew of. It was a very stressful time in our lives. We had literally gone through hell.

I have looked up the effects of this medication and in a large number of cases the symptoms are irreversible. Their are so many problems associated with this medication that I am very surprised that the FDA has allowed its use. It was not until February that they mandated a black box warning for the drug. And that only after the emergence of the cases effecting all those people and the seriousness of the symptoms.

Our case is one of many that have been effected by the use of this drug. I can only imagine how many other drugs their are that have not been completely tested and their contraindications and side effects thoroughly tested. It seems as if the drug companies are trying to get these drugs to the market so fast, they lose sight of the very real possibilities of danger to the patient.

I am sure that their are many people who would be willing to take any medications if they could only relieve the symptoms that they have. People will try anything to treat what they are going through and especially to stop pain at any cost. That does not mean that dangerous drugs should be made available to a marketplace without the most thorough and complete testing possible.

Their are places where drug trials are made involving people who will accept any risk to relieve their symptoms or diminish their pain or for any number of problems they have. This does not give the drug companies the right to put drugs into the marketplace without rigorous testing as to length of use, dosages, and every conceivable problem that could arise.

No drug is without some risk but it is their duty to make that risk as small as is humanly possible for each and every drug they place into the marketplace. The FDA should be more than just a rubber stamp for the information the drug companies supply from their own investigations and tests. Independent testing must be stressed for every new drug submitted from drug companies to the FDA and be backed up by universities equipped to do the testing.

Their would be a great many problems to be worked out to set up a program like that but it must not be run by the government. They have an abysmal record in running any program for the benefit of the people without getting all the special interests involved. It seems that today in Washington, it is the largest pig trough for all the special interests to line up and get their cut out of every program set up. Senators and congresspeople also line up for their contributors to get special treatment and make money.

The problem remains for us to receive the best and safest and most tested drugs for human consumption to treat specific problems that humans can devise. Drugs with side effects that can be more dangerous than the conditions they are to treat must be eliminated and not put on the market just so drug companies can recoup the money they spent on research if the drug does not pan out as safe.

The FDA had been set up to test and approve or disapprove drugs based on information provided but we must insist that they provide rigorous testing on their own and not accept drug trial information as gospel from drug companies. It is a very complicated system we have now but it must be made more open and able to be checked and rechecked. Doctors can only use drugs safely if they are given complete and honest and up to date information about the drugs they prescribe for their patients with all the side effects honestly given them from the FDA and not supplied by drug companies alone. Drug companies send their representatives around to doctors offices to ply them with trips, free vacations, dinners, and many other types of gifts to influence the way they prescribe and use their products over others. This graft has to stop. Drug companies must not be allowed to give any inducements to doctors or hospitals for them to use one drug over another for any reason other than it is a superior product.

Drug companies could hold seminars and invite all doctors and give them all dinner while explaining the new drugs and their uses and their testing and safety. Their is nothing wrong with that approach as it gives the doctor what they need to know and the drug company the audience to prove their drugs efficacy. If we as a nation of consumers do not take the time to look into what is going on around us and try and take steps to do what we can to improve things for ourselves and our children then we will deserve what we get. The drugs we use for ourselves and our children make it our responsibility to assure their safety. Ask the doctors if the drugs they are prescribing are free from side effects harmful to us. Do not be afraid to speak up! If you do not , then who will.

It is up to you America to make the time for problems that effect us all and make changes in the laws and rules and regulations that allow unfair practices to continue. Remember! " All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing " Wake up people!

Are We Witnessing the Beginning of the End For the Internet? Is Government Trying to Block Dissent?

I am now 72 and a veteran of the Marine Corps from 1957, and I have seen many Presidents come and go but none apparently like this one. The only President he reminds me of is Nixon with his adoption of a so called enemies list. I cannot recall any President that was so averse to criticism from any source. I do not blame him for being thin skinned, but I do for his reaction to it.

No President or person has the right to go after critics with threats and or intimidation just to silence criticism. They can try and dissuade people from watching a certain television show by saying they are biased and slanted in their coverage of his administrations proposals and plans but, to go after a stations licenses to force their capitulation and silence them for speaking out, is almost criminal according to our Constitutions prohibition of free speech.

If the President wants to push his own point of view he has the bully pulpit at his disposal to make his views Known at any time. He has the right and ability to come before the American people at any time on television or news conferences to explain to the people what his proposals are and to explain them in detail if he wants to. Out of all our freedoms the one we must defend first and foremost is free speech. Once it is diminished by any factors either in government or outside of it we all lose and lose a lot.

Free speech is the cornerstone of all the other freedoms we strive to keep open and working for us. Without our ability to speak out about what we see as problems or issues, then we are unable to change them. If everyone that speaks out is afraid of retribution by government then we are heading for a dictatorship where criticism is followed by detention camps for dissidents.

Sound familiar? I believe the President has the perfect opportunity to create a website where every point of view of the President can be placed in front of America for discussion and information they can look over and either accept or reject. It seems as if this President is very thin skinned and wants to hit back for any person place or group that does not agree with his point of view or those that critisize him. Richard Nixon was also very thin skinned and drew up his now famous enemies list. His paranoia about enemies being everywhere around him eventually brought down his administration and sent many to jail

The web is the one place that must, at all costs, be kept free of censorship or control by any party or government agency that wants to place restrictions on its use by Americans from every walk of life. If we have that closed to anyone with a point of view to express either for or against any subject then we all lose. The world wide web has to be protected from any direction, no matter what the excuse or aim stated. The administration of President Obama has practically declared war on anyone or any group or source that dare to criticize him or his people around and those from his Chicago background.

I myself have no animosity towards the man but I do for his tactics. As President he has the full power and authority of the white house to do what he deems proper and lawful but this apparent fixation to try and force Fox News to back off on their criticism of the administrations policies by talk show hosts and opinion shows is illegal on the face of it and smacks of dirty tricks by Nixons minions trying to please him. I do remember that period very well as I watched the televised hearings about Presidents impeachment trial.

The web did not exist then as a place for ordinary people to go and voice what they saw unfolding. Personal computers were far in the future for American households. Cell phones did not exist at the time. This generation of young people does not know what it means to have a free and open news source at your fingertips. Back then it was all newspapers and What would they say if it were all gone or restricted to the point where they could not access the web as they wished. Back then it was mostly newspapers and the networks big three. CBS,NBC,ABC,and very few others at the time big enough to stand up to Washington.

Not many people growing up today remember Woodward and Bernstein of Washington Post fame back in the 70s. If it were not for investigative reporters like them on many newspapers at the time, we would never have found out about President Nixon with his dirty tricks and the subversive people he has around him. He secretly taped his own office in the White House, and that ultimately drove him from office when it he was forced to produce them and what they contained. He was paranoid about enemies all around him

The one place everyone can to go to for all the information they could want is WWW. and ask any question you like about any subject and you will find an answer. Their is an abundance of answers and it is sometimes easy to become lost and buried in more information than you can wade through towards your goal. The trick is to keep asking specific questions as you go. I can remember once it took me two hours to nail down my answer to a very specific point but I got there. Normally it probably should not take more than a few minutes.

The web is the one place you can find answers to almost any question and it also is the one place people of power want to be in control of. Ask for any quote the President has made or every promise he has given to the American people and its all there. Almost every family has a computer , or at least has access to one and can look up what they wish. If they gain control over access to the web then we are all lost. The days of newspapers and their investigative reporting are gone forever.

Television reporting is also a whipped dog and they are afraid to lose access to the White House if they are to critical. They put President Obama in the white House by soft pedaling everything he said and demonized the Republican candidates and especially Sarah Palin by Blasting her and invading their family looking for any kind of dirt. It was one of the dirtiest coverages of any election in memory. Their was practically no criticism of Mr Obama or anything he said, but they were all over Sen McCain and Gov Palin for anything and everything.

Wake up America and watch and read about the web and any and all measures to control or manipulate access to the web or regulations for taxing any part of it. That is the first step towards control. Next to be watched and worried about is the proposal for the so called " Fairness Doctrine " being proposed to regulate what commentators or talk show hosts can discuss or criticize. Can you believe that in this day and age the Obama administration wants to place gag orders on what they can say in the name of Fairness!. I would like to know why they are so secretive about everything they do.

Even now with the biggest program ever devised for health care, they are behind locked doors and blocking republicans from even having a say in formulating the basic plan. What kind of congress do we have?. Are they the Imperial legislators of old?. Don't they have to answer to anyone except the President?. They are breaking up the costs, projected for the plan, into several other bills and hiding them within other programs. As I keep saying, go to the web and ask questions and dig into government financing. You will find that the true cost of Obama care will be around one point eight trillion dollars at the finish.

If we as individuals do not keep our eyes open and questioning everything, we may lose our freedoms one by one and bit by bit. As I have said many times before and as I will keep saying: THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE. If people do not question what is going on around them and being proposed by government then when bad things happen we have no one to blame but ourselves. Another of my favotite sayings is: All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men ( and women ) to do nothing.

Watch the internet and television for signs of suppression or control trying to take over and silence critics or any talk show hosts singled out for retribution from the White house or anyone within it.
